Just one cross word and she wouldn't do it again. She'd apologise if you told off the cat. Took all the arguments in the house upon her, as it were. If she'd gone off somewhere into the distance you had to put on your lightest tone of voice, gird yourself like Joyce Grenfell, because if there was a hint of anxiety in your voice she'd think she was being told off and wherever she was, she'd stay. But a couple of claps and she'd come hurtling towards you, often from a completely unexpected direction.

Whippets were bred to be fast enough to catch things but small enough not to need eat the lot themselves. Too poorly insulated to live outdoors they ended up with the secondary role as lap dogs and acquired a lot of what a behaviourist would describe as emotional intelligence.

Where we were out walking in a group with John and his dog Stellar her role was to go up and down making sure no one got left behind. Stellar, meanwhile was showing us the way from the front.Andy Sharphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08584940729037214702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4316941139837330443.post-11655928488810896242014-10-17T20:24:35.554+01:002014-10-17T20:24:35.554+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.Andy Sharphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08584940729037214702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4316941139837330443.post-60101046735781889552014-10-17T18:30:14.555+01:002014-10-17T18:30:14.555+01:00Sorry to hear that, Andy. Our cat ran away when we moved house, when I was 10, and that was it for me with pets, I'm afraid...

Commiserations,

MikeMike C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11279776665185060446noreply@blogger.com
